Wednesday, December 4, 7.30 pm at Pescheria Alessi, Rome. What do a boombox and hip-hop culture have in common with kwela, kwaito, and the South African female rap scene? Maria Paola Guarducci, Francesca Terrenato, and Adriano Elia will explore this intriguing question, sharing insights from a project that uncovers these connections and more. Closing Act: Boombox Resurrection – a performance curated by Adriano Elia where, after years of silence, a Lasonic TRC-931 and a Philips D-8614 come back to life, exchanging dialogues through radio waves and vintage tapes.
The podcast is available here (it starts at 2:03:00, and at around 3:16:20 there is the performance Boombox Resurrection).
On Thursday, 21 November 2024, at 9:30 am, Maria Paola Guarducci and Francesca Terrenato will present their paper, "Writing/Performing a South African Counter-Archive: Intersectionality in Contemporary Women’s Poetry", at the 8th Colloquium on Afrikaans and South African Studies, titled Horizons of Political/Poetical Contestation: South African Intersectional Perspectives Across Disciplines and Languages, at Ghent University, Belgium.
